What a committee is actually reading for

Not what you assume, and not what most guides tell you. Your grades and test scores already did their job elsewhere in the application. The statement exists to answer a different question:

That's why the strongest statements are the most specific ones, and the weakest are the most impressive-sounding ones. "I have always been passionate about engineering" could have been written by ten thousand applicants. A sentence about one specific moment could only have been written by you. The next steps find that moment.

Answer honestly and at length. Don't edit yourself yet — that comes later.

The five-year question

One question, answered specifically, does more work than any opening paragraph. Avoid "a manager" or "successful in my field" — say what, where, and what's missing.

The delete-the-name test: for each reason, ask — could I swap in a different university and have the sentence still make sense? If yes, rewrite it.
